Frequently asked questions
Is semaglutide prescription-only in South Africa?
Yes. Semaglutide is a Schedule 4 medicine in South Africa. A pharmacy may only dispense Ozempic, Wegovy, Semagard or Extensior against a valid prescription from a doctor or another authorised prescriber.
Which semaglutide products are registered in South Africa?
The official medicine price database lists Ozempic, Wegovy and Extensior from Novo Nordisk, and Semagard from Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals. Rybelsus tablets are registered but had no published price when we checked, so they are not in the price table.
What is the single exit price (SEP)?
The SEP is the regulated price of a medicine pack, set by the manufacturer and published by the Department of Health. It is the same for every pharmacy. A pharmacist may add a dispensing fee, and that fee is capped by regulation.
What does "approximate maximum price" mean?
It is the SEP plus the highest dispensing fee a pharmacist may charge under the 2026 fee regulations, including VAT. Treat it as a guide to the most you should expect to pay for one pack; pharmacies may charge less.
Why do most pharmacies show no price?
We only show prices a pharmacy publishes itself. When we checked on 8 October 2026, PharmacyNet was the only pharmacy in this ranking listing semaglutide prices on its website. For the others, the SEP and approximate maximum price show the range a price should fall in.
How are the pharmacies scored?
Each pharmacy is rated 0 to 5 on six criteria: delivery & cold chain (25%), licence & compliance (20%), prescription & consultation (20%), support & contacts (15%), price-info openness (10%), returns policy (10%). The weighted total is shown out of 10. The price itself is not scored, because the SEP is regulated.
Does semaglutide need cold delivery?
Unopened semaglutide pens are stored in a fridge at 2 °C to 8 °C, so the way a pharmacy packs them for delivery matters. The "Cold-chain delivery" badge means the pharmacy states on its website how it keeps fridge-line medicine cold in transit.
Do pharmacies pay to be listed?
No. This site has no affiliate relationships, takes no commission and accepts no payment for placement or ranking. Scores are calculated only from public information and the SAPC register.
